Distributed Systems Lab

The project area „Distributed Systems Lab” (DSL) is in close partnership with the chair Verteilte Systeme (VSYS) and Informationssysteme (ISYS) at the Department of Informatics.

Research topics concern Distributed Systems as well as the adjoining area Information Systems. DSL predominantly cooperates with industry active in distributed information and communication systems, among others by consultation and realization of joint R&D projects, innovative software development, technology counseling, teaching, concept analysis and evaluation etc.

DSL combines several aspects of Distributed Systems technology, for example Middleware, Service-oriented Computing, Web Services, Clouds, Agent- and Component-based Software Development, Self-organization, or Event-based Systems, along with corresponding application areas, such as Electronic Service Markets, E-Commerce / E-Business / E-Services, mobile or obiqitary applications, control of Operational Processes incl. Workflow Management, Logistics, Computer-supported Cooperative Work and Application-oriented User Support, Production Automation and others.

All of these single disciplines add up to a technical foundation for a large number of praxis-oriented and up-to-date distributed applications, especially on the basis of modern internet and intranet technologies.

DLS follows a holistic approach by always also incorporating in-company processes and organizational procedures regarding software production, besides current and future technologies.

Current topics are in the area Service-oriented Computing (SOC) – also Service-oriented Architecture (SOA)- “Web Services”, technical support and organization for operational processes (Business Workflows), as well as Cloud Services. Among others, DSL employs multi-agent technology and corresponding software development techniques (also for sustainable software applications), and techniques for self-organization (Autonomous Computing).
